Jumla (Saudi Arabia) (AFP) - Tens of thousands of Saudi young people have turned their backs on a kingdom they say is no longer fit for them because of soaring unemployment rates and a government which they say is unwilling to tackle corruption and social inequality.

Many are rejecting the kingdom's "liberalisation" policies and the "Saudi way" of governing, leaving them feeling alienated from the country's traditional conservatives and angry with the state that has become their primary target.

"I want to live like a citizen. I don't see that in Saudi Arabia anymore," a 21-year-old graduate student from the town of Taif told AFP by telephone on the outskirts of Jumla on Wednesday.

"My friends and relatives think I'm a loser, so they try to force me to wear expensive designer clothes and be with them. But I hate the way I look for everyone to see, which is how the conservative Saudis are. The government is only interested in creating jobs and keeping its image as a good neighbor."

Many students and others in Jumla have decided to leave the once prosperous oil-rich nation and instead join other poor and minority communities in areas further afield, fearing that their future looks brighter in countries such as Qatar.

"When I go abroad, my friends and relatives tell me to stay and I'm not scared of this," said a 17-year-old student.

The Saudi government has been trying to woo young Saudis to relocate to the Gulf region -- which the World Bank says has the fifth-highest share of young people -- but many young Saudis are disillusioned with life in the Gulf's poorest society where the rate of education is near half that of elsewhere in the Middle East.

"I'm fed up with life in this country, because I can't afford the food and there is no money left for everything," said 23-year-old student Rida.

- 'Dereliction of duty' -

Many young Saudis will no longer be allowed to attend school. The government has been scrambling to find money to pay salaries to teachers and health care workers in the kingdom's cities while also funding a programme for the poor called the Islamic Relief Fund.

"The Islamic Relief Fund should have been funded before, but in my country I don't have money," said Rida, a former child soldier of the Arab Spring uprising.

Most young Saudi graduates who return home say they feel neglected by the authorities.

"The government doesn't pay the bills. I don't get paid for doin
